Julia Martinez Fernandez

Julia Martinez Fernandez is Doctor in Biology, researcher at the Sustainability Observatory, Associate Professor of Ecology at Universidad Miguel Hernandez and the Executive Director of Fundacion Nueva Cultura del Agua (New Water Culture Foundation).

Julia has participated in some 25 national and international research projects with strong emphasis on inter and transdisciplinary approaches focusing on the dynamics and modelling of socio-ecological systems and scenario analysis, the development of water sustainability indicators, the environmental and socio-economic interactions of water management and the ecology of water-related systems, particularly wetlands and coastal lagoons and their watersheds. She is member of the group of 100 European water experts signing the European Declaration for a New Water Culture and provides counseling as water expert regarding water policies and legislation at the European, national and regional levels.

The New Water Culture Foundation (FNCA) is an Iberian (Spain and Portugal) non-profit organization composed by over 200 outstanding members from academia, research institutions, public administration, private sector, stakeholders and citizens, aiming at promoting a change towards a more sustainable water management and a new water culture. The FNCA promotes a more comprehensive water analysis and understanding, the application of inter and trans-disciplinary approaches, the integration of ecological, economic, social and cultural dimensions, an improved water governance and a wide cross-collaboration among researchers, stakeholders, decision-makers and the public opinion. FNCA is member of the following EIP Water AG Groups: NatureWat (“Nature-based technologies for innovation in water management”) and RiverRes (River Restoration”).
