Given a choice between diyas and LED (light-emitting diode) lights, many would opt for the former to light up their homes on Diwali. But if seen from a scientific angle, it’s a choice between particulate emissions or power consumption.

“Households are a key part of the solution to reducing energy demand—domestic energy use already accounts for a quarter of global final energy demand and a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions. Most of the growth in future household energy demand is projected to be in urban areas in developing countries, such as in India," says Radhika Khosla, research director, Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development, on email.
