Briefing ahead of UNFCCC COP25

A briefing ahead of the 25th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP25), to be held in Madrid, Spain, from 2-13 December 2019, under the Presidency of the Government of Chile, took place at the International Environment House on Tuesday 12 November. (Due to social and political unrest in Santiago, the event will be hosted in Madrid, while remaining under the presidency of Chile).

This event, organized within the framework of the Geneva Environment Network, had a particular focus on nature-based solutions, the just transition and climate migration and displacement topics to be addressed at COP25.

This will be the last COP within horizon 2020, the first target period of the Paris Agreement. Implementation of Article 6 of the Paris agreement will be at the core of negotiations during COP25: Increased ambition to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Ambitions and targets will be set for horizons 2030, 2050 and 2100:
  • 2030: reduce GHG emissions by 45%
  • 2050: net-zero CO2 emissions
  • 2100 stop temperature increase below 1.5 degree centigrade
Besides boosting ambitions, key themes of COP25 will include:
  • Indigenous peoples
  • Gender
  • Nature-based solutions
  • Climate-driven displacement and migration
