Recognition of Loss & Damage from wildfires is key for climate justice

The escalating impacts of increasing wildfire activity, exacerbated by anthropogenic climate change, are driving profound economic and non-economic losses that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. In this paper, Maria L. F. Barbosa and colleagues argue for the inclusion of wildfires in the Loss & Damage framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This will aid in to support prevention, recovery and justice for the most affected communities. This is because inclusion of wildfires as a core component of the Loss & Damage framework is not only a scientific imperative but also a matter of climate justice.
